(AUSTIN, Texas) 10.24.2016 – Huston-Tillotson University is pleased to announce that Kiara Johnson has been selected by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities as a member of the 2016 HBCU All-Stars.

A Houston, Texas, resident, Ms. Johnson is one of 73 students from across 63 HBCUs named as the 2016 HBCU All-Stars to attend the National HBCU Week Conference, which began in Washington, D.C.,  this past Sunday, Oct. 23. She is currently majoring in psychology. The All-Stars are comprised of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, who will be recognized for their accomplishments in academics, leadership, and civic engagement.

“I am extremely grateful to have been selected for this experience and to represent Huston-Tillotson University,” Johnson said. “It is honestly unlike any other experience I’ve had. I expect to learn more about HBCU innovation and sustainability as well as ways I can continue to help my HBCU thrive and grow.”

Over the next year, Ms. Johnson and the other 72 HBCU All-Stars will serve as ambassadors by providing outreach opportunities and communicating with other students about the value of both education and the Initiative as a networking source. According to the original press release, the All-Stars were selected from over 300 students from 24 states, the District of Columbia, Ghana, Nigeria, and the Virgin Islands. They will work together and as a group and network with one another to achieve their goals.

Ms. Johnson is a W.E.B Du Bois Honors Student, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a charter member of Psi Chi International Honor Society for Psychology, and is also part of the Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society at Huston-Tillotson University.
